3RDW April Monthly Meeting Recap + Celebrating Erin McClelland's Win!

3RDW celebrated Erin McClelland, Rep. Abigail Salisbury, & Angela Girol at the April Monthly Meeting on their Primary Wins! They shared with us their visions and hopes for the future as they head into the General Election season this November and discussed their campaigns. We also got to hear from Judy Bannon about how she started and grew her Cribs for Kids organization in Pittsburgh into an international organization that has drastically reduced the rate of SIDS since the early 1990's; and Rep. Salisbury provided an overview of the MAYA Organization and how they grew from focusing on adoptions to now focusing on providing maternal health and parenting support for BIPOC & marginalized parents during pregnancy and after.

Erin McClelland's "Upset" Win in the Treasurer Race

One of the most striking comments was from Erin McClelland (a new 3RDW member) where she spoke of the challenges she faced with her competitors' fundraising advantage & the Democratic Party Endorsement. Despite these obstacles, she won 54% of the vote (70% here in Allegheny County!) with only around $65,000 raised "and her 4 wheels" going across the state to spread her message - and it paid off! Erin will be going head-to-head with the incumbent Treasurer (and election denier) Stacy Garrity. We must work hard to get Erin elected - not only to remove Stacy Garrity - but to implement better cyber-security measures, common-sense financial practices, and to stop the forced implementation of a mandatory Keystone Saves Program for service workers.

Abigail Salisbury is Elected By the People

Abigail Salisbury fought off a primary challenge to retain her role as State Representative for the 34th District winning 63.1% of the vote. At the meeting, she also provided an overview of the organization MAYA, which is located in her district, and their services for pregnant women and new parents - especially BIPOC and marginalized women. They will be holding a Mother's Day Tea Event on Sunday, May 11th at Hosanna House - tickets can be purchased here.

Angela Girol takes on Kuzma (Rep) in General

Angela Girol, running for House District 39, will be challenging the incumbent Republican Andrew Kuzma in November's General Election. Angela is a dedicated teacher at Elizabeth Forward, currently serves on the School Board for South Park, and is a champion for women's rights and our children. This District is very challenging for a Democrat to run and win - 3RDW Members will be invited to help Angela on the campaign trail in the coming months to get the word out and canvass for her win!
